Defining Item Segments
An item segment is a group of items that can be made visible to one or more customer segments. Personalized Catalog Views (PCV) offers the following item segments:
-
Item Collections – Add specific items to an item collection record manually or by using a saved search. For more information, see Item Collections.
-
Commerce Categories – Create a hierarchical structure of product categories, subcategories, and products to display on your website. If you use commerce categories to organize and display products on your website, you can also use them in PCV to display specific commerce categories to selected customer segments. For more information, see Commerce Categories.
-
Unmapped Items – Not a true item segment, but a way NetSuite groups items not mapped to a customer segment. This happens when items aren't in any item segments, or because the item segments, in which they are included, are not mapped to any customer segments.
Commerce categories might not be the best choice for PCV since they aren't always tailored to specific customers or customer segments. For instance, on a clothing website, you might want visitors to see products grouped by Men's, Women's, and Accessories. However, you might want VIP customers to see a "VIP Items" item segment with products from all three categories. In this case, where the hierarchical item groupings are distinct from the customer-focused item groupings, it would be much better to create “VIP Items” as an item collection.
Your choice of item collections, commerce categories, or a combination depends on your desired outcome.
