Troubleshooting the Barcode Scanner

In most cases, the three settings/options that affect scanner functionality in POS are:
  • Serial (COM3) vs POS HID

  • [CR] carriage return (present or not)

  • Leading and trailing digits (scanned or not). Whether it should scan the leading and trailing digits is determined by how the menu item barcodes are entered into EMC and the Barcode Format Sets used.

To check the configuration, use the OPOS Validation Utility and Device Manager.

  1. Close Simphony/POS app.

  2. Start | Honeywell | OPOS Validation Utility | click the Device Name option, and then select Honeywell.

  3. Click Begin Test.

  4. Point scanner at a UPC-A (12 digits) barcode and press the scan button.

  5. Result = Data: 073854008089[CR]

    Data Type: SCAN_SDT_UPCA(101)

  6. Open Control Panel | Device Manager | Ports

    1. Honeywell N4680 (COM3) = Serial (default setting)

    2. POS HID Barcode Scanner = POS HID

To make changes to the scanner, use the scan codes in this document and then verify the results with the OPOS Validation Utility and Device manager as outlined above. Only the data results are part of the scan. This example shows the leading and trailing digits = 12 digits. This example also includes a carriage return.
