Understand Location Types

Each onboarded device or edge node can maintain one, two, or three locations. Understanding how Oracle ECP uses each one helps you interpret what appears during onboarding, on the Location tab, and in Inventory Map View.

Deployment Location

Deployment location identifies where the hardware is physically installed. Oracle ECP stores deployment location as deployment coordinates. When an address is available, Oracle ECP can also associate a deployment address with those coordinates.

Oracle ECP uses deployment location to place hardware on the inventory map and to show location details on the Location tab. During onboarding, Oracle ECP must determine deployment coordinates for each hardware record before onboarding is complete.

If you provide only an address, Oracle ECP attempts to convert the address to coordinates. If you provide only coordinates, Oracle ECP attempts to derive an address. If you provide both, Oracle ECP stores both values. Detailed validation depends on the onboarding method and the connectivity requirements for the hardware.

Address lookup depends on Oracle spatial library coverage. In some countries or remote areas, Oracle ECP might not be able to resolve an address from coordinates or resolve coordinates from an address.

Registration Address

Registration address identifies the service or business address associated with the hardware. In many cases, the registration address and the deployment location are the same. In some deployments, such as remote, offshore, or satellite scenarios, the two values can differ.

Registration address is used only when connectivity registration requires it, such as Starlink for edge nodes or FirstNet for devices. In these cases, the registration address identifies the business or service location, while the deployment location identifies the physical location of the hardware.

GPS Location

GPS location identifies the last reported current position of supported MDM-enabled devices. GPS location is separate from deployment location.

On the Location tab of an MDM-enabled device, Oracle ECP can show GPS location as a separate marker from the deployment-location marker. By default, the GPS-location marker appears as a steady circle. You can change it to blink in My Settings.

Deployment location continues to represent the physical deployment site that Oracle ECP uses for the deployment-location inventory map. GPS location appears only on the device Location tab. It does not appear in Inventory Map View.
