Replace the SAS Cable

This is an internal component that is accessible from the back of the server by removing the SMOD. Perform this procedure to replace the SAS cable on the SMODs.

  1. Prepare the server for cold service.

    This is a cold-service component. Power down the system and disconnect the AC power cables from the server before performing this procedure.

    See Preparing the Server for Component Replacement.

  2. Remove the SMOD.
  3. Set the SMOD on a flat surface with the front side facing toward you.
  4. Close the SMOD handles.
  5. Rotate the SMOD 180 degrees so the back (connector) side is facing toward you.
  6. Turn the SMOD upside down and locate the HBA.

    The HBA card is located inside the SMOD.

    Note:

    The connector (back) side of the SMOD should still be facing you.

  7. Disconnect the SAS cable from the HBA port [1].
  8. Disconnect the SAS cable from the drive backplane [2].

  9. Carefully route the SAS cable away from the guide.
  10. Remove the SAS cable from the SMOD.
  11. Connect the replacement Mini-SAS4I cable end labeled "TO DBP" to the drive backplane.
  12. Route the replacement SAS cable from the drive backplane to the HBA card connector.
  13. Ensure that the are routed under the support bracket.
  14. Connect the replacement Mini-SAS4I cable end labeled "TO HBA" to the HBA card connector.
  15. Install the SMOD.
  16. Prepare the server for operation.
