Configure Single 4-Socket Server to Dual 4-Socket Servers (FRU)

  • Prepare to set up and configure two servers (System A and System B) for independent operation.

  • Determine Oracle Server X8-8 CMOD CPU module processor and memory population.

    Note:

In a dual 4-socket configuration, the two sides of the system can support either identical or different processor SKUs and memory.

In an Oracle Server X8-8 dual 4-socket system (2x4), the System A and System B CMOD processor and memory populations can be dissimilar. Conversion to a single 8-socket system (1x8) may require additional CMOD processor and memory removal and replacement to match all CMODs.

  • Obtain Oracle Server X8-8 CPU Modules packages: 4 CMOD CPU module kits with processor modules

  • Obtain System B server optional components such as PCIe cards and storage drives, as required. See Replaceable Components.

  • Resolve all open problems in the server, server components, and chassis.

The following procedure describes how to configure an Oracle Server X8-8 single 4-socket system (1x4) to a dual 4-socket system (2x4).

Caution:

CPU modules must be removed and replaced only by authorized Oracle Service personnel.

Caution:

This procedure requires that you handle components that are sensitive to electrostatic discharge. This sensitivity can cause the component to fail. To avoid damage, ensure that you follow electrostatic discharge safety measures and antistatic practices. See Electrostatic Discharge and Static Prevention Measures.

  1. Clear all server faults.
  2. Verify the System A server single 4-Socket (1x4) mode.
    • System B is not active.

    • Fans FM4-7 are installed but are not running.

    • CMODs 4-7 are not installed.

    • Inspect the AC power block on the back panel.

Power cords to AC inlets 0, 1, 2, and 3 must be connected. All four AC power connectors on the back panel must be attached using grounded AC power cords. See Back Panel Components.

See Verify the Current Socket Mode Configuration.

  3. Connect the System B management ports on SMOD1 on the back panel.
    • Connect a serial cable between the SP and a terminal device or PC, used for the initial configuration. Attach the serial cable to the System B serial management port SER MGT.

    • Connect an Ethernet cable for the SP to the administration network. Attach an Ethernet cable to the System B SP management port NET MGT.

    • Connect an Ethernet cable for the host's primary interface to the main network. Attach Ethernet cables to the System B four network ports NET0-3.

See Attaching Devices to the Server and Back Panel Components.

  4. Prepare the server for cold service.
  5. Unpack the new Oracle Server X8-8 4 CPU Modules package components.

Before starting this step, confirm that you have obtained the correct CPU Module packages. See Oracle X8-8 CPU Packages.

Place the CPU modules and components on an ESD safety mat.

    Note:

If the CMODs in System B side slots 4, 5, 6 and 7 processor and memory configurations are not identical, the server will not power on. System A can use different processor and memory configurations.

  6. Install four CMODs in System B-side slots 4, 5, 6 and 7.
  7. Add System B server optional components as required.

Optional components include PCIe cards and storage drives. See Replaceable Components and Servicing Components.

  8. Return the System A server to operation.

Verify that the two power supply AC OK LEDs are lit.

When the System A server is powered on and the power-on self-test (POST) code checkpoint tests have completed, the System A green System OK LED status indicator on the front panel of the server lights and remains lit.

See Returning the Server to Operation.

  9. Return the System B server to operation.

Verify that the two power supply AC OK LEDs are lit.

When the System B server is powered on and the power-on self-test (POST) code checkpoint tests have completed, the System B green System OK LED status indicator on the front panel of the server lights and remains lit.

See Returning the Server to Operation.

  10. Verify the System B server dual 4-socket (2x4) server mode.
  11. Update the System B server Oracle ILOM and BIOS firmware.

A System Firmware (SysFW) image contains both the SP and BIOS firmware. An upgrade takes about five to seven minutes to complete. No other tasks can be performed using the SP until the firmware upgrade is complete and Oracle ILOM is reset.

Refer to Getting Firmware and Software in Oracle Server X8-8 Installation Guide.

  12. Run UEFI diagnostics for System A and System B.
  13. Configure the operating systems for System A and System B.

Refer to the OS Installation documentation.
