1 About Deploying Oracle Linux

Oracle Linux can be installed in various ways. This document focuses on installation of Oracle Linux by using an installation image that's available in ISO format. You can download the installation image and load it to bootable media to boot a bare metal system or virtual machine into the installer. The installer is used to install the operating system onto the hard disks or block devices that are available to the system.

You can also obtain media for other install environments, such as container images, cloud images in qcow2 and ova formats, and a Raspberry Pi installation image. See https://yum.oracle.com/oracle-linux-downloads.html for more information about the available formats that you can download.

For developers who use the Raspberry Pi hardware platform, Oracle provides an unsupported developer release image, which includes the required firmware to boot this platform. For more information about using the Raspberry Pi hardware platform, see Install Oracle Linux on a Raspberry Pi.

Many cloud providers include Oracle Linux as an option for cloud instance deployment. In these cases, the images are predefined and you can select the appropriate cloud image for the Oracle Linux release that you want to use and deploy that. Oracle Linux releases are provided as platform images on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). You can use these images to deploy Oracle Linux to compute instances. For information about these images, see the release notes for the specific image that you're using on the OCI Documentation page at https://docs.oracle.com/iaas/images/. For information about using Oracle Linux instances on OCI, https://docs.oracle.com/en-us/iaas/oracle-linux/home.htm.
