Configure the Left Navigator

By default, VB Studio displays all menu items in the left navigator, but you can hide the ones you don't use. At minimum, you can always hide menu items just for yourself. And, if you're an org admin or project owner, you can hide menu items for the entire organization or for specific projects, as well.

Here's how to show only the menu items you want in the left navigator:
  1. In the left navigator, click Configure left navigator to open the Configure Left Navigator dialog.
    • The Configure Left Navigator dialog always displays the User column, which you can use to customize your own personal view of the left navigator.
    • If you're an owner of the current project, you'll also see the Project column, which you can use to customize the left navigator for all members of the current project.

If you're on the Organization page outside of a project, the Project column won't display in the dialog.

    • If you're an org admin, you'll also see the Organization column, which you can use to customize the left navigator for all projects in the organization.
    • Note that project settings override org settings, and user settings take precedence over all.
  2. Use the checkboxes to control which menu items display in the left navigator:
    Checkbox Setting Description
Selected The menu item has been selected for display.
Hidden The menu item has been hidden.
    Unset

The menu item hasn't been configured (it's unset), which means it will either inherit the display setting made at the previous level, if one exists, or display by default.

For example, if a user setting is unset, then it inherits the project setting. If the project setting is unset, then it inherits the organization setting. If the organization setting is unset, then it displays by default.

This means that if a menu item hasn't been configured at any level, it displays by default everywhere. (This is the initial setting when you first edit the left navigator.)

The Organization and Project Home menu items are always selected and can't be hidden.

  3. Click Save.

To understand how your selections are applied, let's look at some specific settings in this dialog example:

  • The Workspaces and Git menu items haven't been configured at any level, so both menu items display by default everywhere.
  • The Merge Requests menu item will display for all projects in the organization, except for the current one.

The logged-in user, however, will see the Merge Requests menu item.

  • The Maven menu item will display for all projects in the organization, except for the current one.

The logged-in user will not see the Maven menu item. This is because the Maven user setting inherits the project setting.
