Start Managed Servers in a cluster

Before you begin

Ensure that you have created a cluster and assigned Managed Servers to it.

For information on creating a Managed Server, see Create Managed Servers.

To start Managed Servers in the Standby or Admin mode, see Specify a startup mode.


To start or stop a Managed Server in a cluster:

  1. Configure the Managed Server to communicate with a Node Manager.
    Node Manager is a stand-alone Java program provided with each WebLogic Server installation. You use it to start, stop, and suspend server instances, and to automatically restart servers that fail. Node Manager must run on each computer that hosts WebLogic Server instances that you want to control with Node Manager. Configure each computer as a machine in WebLogic Server, and assign each server instance that you will control with Node Manager to the machine upon which it runs.

  2. Start Node Manager on the computer where you want to host the Managed Server.

    Although running Node Manager as an operating system service is recommended, you can also start the Node Manager manually at the command prompt or with a script. On Windows, you can start the Node Manager using a shortcut on the Start menu. See Starting and Stopping Node Manager.

  3. In the Administration Console, expand Environment and select Clusters.
  4. Select the cluster containing the Managed Servers you want to start.
  5. Select Control.
  6. Under Managed Server Instances in this Cluster, select the check boxes next to the Managed Servers you want to start and click Start.
  7. On the Server Life Cycle Assistant page, click Yes to confirm.

    Node Manager starts the server on the target machine. When the Node Manager finishes its start sequence, the server's state is indicated in the State column in the Server Status table.

Result

When an operation is complete for a Managed Server, TASK COMPLETED appears in the Status column.
